Despite the vast potential that genetically modified algae have, there conventional algal biotechnology is also worth investing in. Algae are a source of yet unexplored and unevaluated compounds. We have knowledge and equipment for bioprospecting, small-scale isolation and characterization of such compounds. In 2015, we joined COST action "European Network for Algal Bioproducts" through which we gained invaluable insight into classical algal biotechnology, from biomass cultivation and harvesting, to final products.

We have in-house access to a 70-litres photobioreactor that is suitable for pilot-scale growth of suspended (micro)algae and we have plans to use it for biotech experiments in the future.
